10-57 What distinguishes this overpass is the following: the ramps which connect the 10 and the 57 are sandwiched between the 10, on the bottom, and 57 on top. What makes this possible is the two adjacent hills on both sides of the 10 which naturally elevate the 57. Say you are going west on the 10 and you want to go south on the 57: you get shot through a brilliant maze of blocks, pillars, slabs, and beams, which are used to support the overhead freeway. This one gets our vote for the best interchange in the LA area. We heard rumors that three years ago a bus load of Japanese tourists crashed while driving through this interchange. Upon viewing the last few seconds of footage of the 32 video camcorders on board, to their horror Caltrans realized that all 31 passengers and the driver were watching, not the road, but the surrounding over- and under-passes. They don’t make interchanges like this anymore is because of all the accidents caused by ecstatic sightseers, straining their neck to see the maze of roads. (he he)
