5/55 This seems to me to be, for the most part, an unexceptional interchange (at least compared to other interchanges found here in Southern California). However, the ramp from the 5 N to the 55 N (towards Riverside) is really neat. It exits the 5 N to the right, banks downward, goes back up again while banking to the left and crossing over another exit ramp (from the 55)!
Actually, this interchange has a number of other great features (I forgot about them until we drove under the thing and Jaime started squealing with glee). Namely the incredible carpool viaduct that bridges 5 N and 55 S. This thing is amazing; 1.7 miles of great views and great fun. Make sure you bring a friend, unless you want to pay the $261 HOV violation toll. PS—Jaime continued to squeal though out the duration of the overpass!
The highest overpass? I don’t know: three overpasses, 55 S Þ 5 N, 55 N Þ 5 N and 55 N Û 5 N (carpool lanes), seem to be about the same height. |
