710/San Pedro bridge We couldn’t help ourselves—we had to go on these bridges! Wow! The suspension bridge just blows me away. San Pedro is a showcase of bridges—suspension, cavalier, etc.. We love the boats too, and the trains, and the trucks (Peterbilt!), and the ship yards.
I got in an argument with my friend Jasmine the other day. After telling her about interchange/overpass day she said, "Overpasses? If you want to see good overpasses, you really need to go to the East coast!" Now I’ve been to the east coast and admittedly there are some decent overpasses there. Baltimore comes to mind. But for the most part, I think LA remains the unchallenged kingdom of the overpass. In New York, to my admittedly uniformed eyes, the overpasses looked chunky and antiquated. I think when Jasmine made that comment she was thinking primarily, not overpasses or interchanges, but of bridges: cavalier bridges, suspension bridges, bridges often which traverse large expanses of water. Now when it comes to bridges, I’m not sure which coast has the edge. For all the tolls you pay between New York and Washington DC, you do cross some pretty impressive bridges. But then we have San Francisco (I’ve never been to Seattle) which has, of course, the Bay bridge and the Golden Gate—two heavy weight champions. LA, when it comes to bridges, is a bit a dud—but we take what we can get, and brag about it. What do you think? |
